It’s that time of year again, time for music industry types to drop fat stacks of benjamins for a chance to glimpse the Next Big Thing at some lame venue. But, as they say, every douchebag has a silver lining. We're talking about overflow: this week, every band is in town, and looking for a party.
Saturday, October 24th
With the help of some nice guy named Todd P, we nabbed the raw space above the auto parts store on Jefferson and Bushwick for a Saturday night grrrrr-age fest. With an open bar, four irrepressibly energetic bands, and no work the next the day unless you’re a preacher, this one’s gonna get crazy.
Screaming Females
Raised in the DIY dens of New Brunswick, NJ, Screaming Females are "2009's answer to Sleater-Kinney's 2006 breakup," (Rolling Stone). We first caught 'em at a Crown Heights house party last New Year's Eve; since then, they’ve been been hand-picked by Jack White and J. Mascis to tour with the Dead Weather and Dinosaur Jr. (respectively), and have even been name-dropped by the Indigo Girls (hilariously true). Simply put, the trio's pint-size singer Marissa Paternoster, "creates a sound that's absolutely colossal" (New York Magazine).
Surfer Blood
This West Palm Beach, Florida act caused a minor stampede on Grand St. recently when they came through town for a few small gigs. Since then, Pitchfork has lauded their "irresistibly catchy, and well, surf-y rock," and now, they've lined up something like nine NYC shows in four days.
JEFF The Brotherhood
JEFF is Jake and Jamin Orrall (both ex-Be Your Own Pet), two brothers from Nashville who use drums and guitar to create a sound somewhere between "melodic power-pop and metallic stoner rock" (Time Out New York). The Deli said, "When it comes to JEFF the Brotherhood, there are two kinds of people: those that love their music and those who haven't heard it yet." Clearly, we're in the former camp. Even Ted Leo's been shilling for these dudes lately.
Sisters
Another two-man two-piece familiar with fuzz and a melody or two, Sisters was borne of the Death by Audio music collective here in Brooklyn, and brings a sweet n' raucous live set. They're sorta like Wavves, but without the bar fights.
Saturday, October 24, doors and open bar at 10pm
600 Bushwick Avenue, Brooklyn, NY
All ages, $10 with RSVP
